The First National Directory of Libraries of Puerto Rico

No one knew how many libraries Puerto Rico had — or where they were. We’re building the first comprehensive directory of the archipelago’s libraries, so communities, funders, and policymakers can finally see, support, and strengthen the whole system.

Why a directory matters

01

Visibility

Libraries that aren’t counted can’t be funded. Mapping every library — public, school, community, and academic — makes the invisible visible.

02

Connection

A shared directory lets librarians across the archipelago find each other, share resources, and coordinate — especially in disaster recovery.

03

Advocacy

Reliable data gives policymakers and funders the evidence to invest in Puerto Rico’s libraries as essential civic infrastructure.

Built with communities, not just about them

The directory grows from on-the-ground visits and local partnerships — from Loíza to Culebra — combining field research with community knowledge to capture libraries no census has ever listed.
